Heart Health & Chiropractic Care

Do you suffer from high blood pressure? Are you at risk for heart disease? If you are overweight, don’t exercise, and are a smoker, your risk of heart disease increase exponentially. According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in America today. Although chiropractic care is mainly associated with alleviating soft tissue discomfort, the benefits of chiropractic have been proven to extend beyond manipulations of the spine. Studies have shown that chiropractic manipulations can help to prevent heart attacks, reduce heart rate, relieve chest pain, and lower blood pressure, which is all good news for your heart!

A lesser known factor affecting heart function is the nerve system. “Nerves from the upper back (sympathetic) stimulate the heart to beat faster and more forcefully. The vagus nerve (parasympathetic) passes through the skull and down to the heart to slow the pulse and decrease the power of each contraction. Normal function is the result of a balance between these two systems. Spinal misalignments, which interfere with these nerves (vertebral subluxations), can adversely affect heart function.”

How can Chiropractic care help my heart?

Chiropractic treatments provide a considerable impact on blood pressure levels, as well as anxiety levels – all key elements in keeping your heart healthy. In addition to manipulations that promote healthier heart function, your chiropractor is able to advise you about diet and fitness changes that you can incorporate into your life – all bringing about healthy, heart happy changes. High blood pressure can lead to damage to muscle tissue, diabetes, infertility, and slower healing from disease and injury.

Chiropractic care does not attempt to treat or cure heart disease, but it certainly can help! Adjustments can correct vertebral subluxations, which interfere with normal nerve and body function. Thus, restoring ‘normal’ nerve function would allow the heart and the cardiovascular system to function at their full potential.  Chiropractic care can increase vitality, boost immunity, relieve a variety of musculoskeletal ailments and strengthen the heart and cardiovascular system.
